Dr. Muñoz receives endorsement by Cranston School Committee Representative (Ward 5), David Alden Sears, Providence County, RI
We are excited to announce that Dr. Luis Daniel Muñoz has received an official endorsement by David Alden Sears, who represents Ward 5 on Cranston's School Committee.
"I am delighted to endorse and support Dr. Luis Daniel Muñoz for Governor of Rhode Island. For too long our state has demanded change, and for too long our pleas have fallen on the deaf ears of the insiders who have been holding our state back. I am confident that Luis Daniel has the fortitude, the determination, and the vision to enact such change here, and I am honored to stand with him as he seeks the state's highest office," stated Mr. Alden Sears.
"I am very grateful for Mr. Alden Sears' endorsement. As a campaign team, we are fired up! David has shown tremendous courage such as, taking an early stance on school masking, in order to protect children, teachers, and communities. As a democrat and millennial leader in Cranston, he has shown the candor, fight, and heart that will catalyze progress in Cranston, and beyond. This is only the beginning," wrote Dr. Muñoz.

Our campaign team received a copy of a campaign email blast sent by Ms. Gorbea to her supporters, where Ms. Gorbea claims to be the only candidate officially running for Governor of Rhode Island. The letter also implied that Ms. Gorbea would be the first Latinx Democrat Governor in New England.
The statement disregards Dr. Muñoz’s official gubernatorial announcement, which was made over five months ago, and his Puerto Rican heritage. Ms. Gorbea and her team are very aware of both facts, especially since they are frequently portrayed in the media. Tactics which suppress opponents in this manner are deceptive and disrespectful. If Ms. Gorbea doesn’t honor truth, then should Rhode Islanders trust whether she will do so as Governor?
Dr. Muñoz stated, "Clearly, the letter was designed to misinform Rhode Island voters, which speaks to how 'establishment' politics have historically played out in Rhode Island. If lies propel someone into office, then lies are all that they will have to offer when in office. If we wish to end cronyism in Rhode Island, then we must stop accepting lies and insider tactics.
Rhode Island deserves better! The people are tired of those who would compromise values and common decency for political self preservation. We are also tired of cronies and wealth managers who take elected office to further deplete resources from those Rhode Islanders struggling to survive. This incident has served as a necessary reminder that change is essential, and progress must come.
I want to thank my team for presenting facts, and for helping us face our opponents on the grounds of values, ideas, and substantive plans. The four national endorsements that I've received are a reflection of what WE represent, and how we operate, and of what path we might collectively take towards progress in Rhode Island."
We demand that the Gorbea campaign rectify and acknowledge these harmful actions. Ms. Gorbea should be proud to recognize her shared latino heritage with Dr. Muñoz, as it is a ground-breaking moment for New England.
Dr. Muñoz stated, "The progress needed must also expand beyond one community, to support the many diverse communities that are working everyday to survive, in a state where they should have access to resources that would allow them, to thrive. The first step is, truth. The next step, is action. We're already in motion."
Thank you for taking the time to review this press release.
Dr. Muñoz stated that "historically disenfranchised communities must be engaged in redistricting planning, in order to ensure that we maintain a truly representative government in the state of Rhode Island."

Dr. Luis Daniel Muñoz calls for greater funding for overdose prevention programs
The Health of our communities, and of our state, must always be the focus of elected officials. The courageous act by the Rhode Island Overdose Taskforce, to take a stand on this important issue related to programs that are designed to address a public health crisis, should serve as an example for all leaders in Rhode Island.
Dr. Muñoz stands with the Overdose Taskforce in calling for funding to support people and communities in need of support.
"The McKee administration has unethically allocated millions of dollars to its well connected friends, while simultaneously failing to manage, deploy, and execute on health and housing programs. The fact is that we are facing multiple public health emergencies that will not be resolved by political gaming and cronyism. The Governor has demonstrated that insider deals, which will push us towards privatization of public health and public education, are in his agenda. As a consequence, we are witnessing an indifference by the administration to threatened budget cuts for programs that aim to decrease overdose deaths, along with a general displacement of accountability on public health measures aimed to protect children’s health. Our most vulnerable are being left behind.
I call on the administration to use federal dollars to provide adequate funding to these programs, and to stop the privatization of public health and other public service areas. It’s time for change, and it’s time for leaders who understand public health, and have the political courage to place the health of Rhode Island before all else."

Congress approved approximately $50 billion to help people pay back rent, but in many states, money hasn't reached the vast majority of people in need. The decision by SCOTUS to overturn the eviction moratorium places thousands of Rhode Islanders at risk for eviction.
Dr. Muñoz stated, "RI has approximately $352M available for rent relief and related assistance programs. Rhode Island has dispersed less than $13M, according to RI Housing. By the end of September, Rhode Island may lose more than $100M, since the treasury can choose to take back unused funds.
The administration claims that Rhode Island is meeting "the need", but that "need" is based on definitions that limit what impact COVID-19 has had on an individual's state of health and finance. For instance, some individuals in areas of high infection rates are unable to stop working, despite the risks that they face as essential workers. Although the risks of hospitalization and death for some communities are higher than others, this argument as a cause for staying home and needing economic support, does not meet the criteria for rental relief assistance. The implied message for some is, risk life for rent, because help isn’t coming.
We can, and should be doing more. Now is the time to reduce barriers to access, and to support communities impacted by COVID-19, and by the economic consequences of local outbreaks. It is essential that we have greater oversight, and a full investigation into the processes and applied definitions, which are used to determine support for Rhode Islanders who are in need of rent relief.
We must do better! In Rhode Island, approximately 40,000 people are at risk for eviction this winter."
