The fact is that public health is not fatalistic. While we must face the probability of poor outcomes, public-health measures are designed to reduce harm and suffering. As a physician and community organizer who has supported contact tracing and vaccination operations, and as a member of Rhode Island’s Equity Council, I believe that it is time to acknowledge the extraordinary risks that the COVID-19 delta variant presents to vulnerable communities, and children in Rhode Island.
